Roma Saleyards was abuzz this week with vendors, school holiday makers and the LifeFlight Australia team onsite as over 8500 head of cattle went to market.

The yarding saw an increase of 2067 on last week’s penning.

The market was reflective of condition, however quality lines remained firm and sold to an active buyer presence.

Local and afar cattle made up the yarding with lines once again drawn largely from western regions such as Quilpie, Corfield, Tambo, Jundah, Bollon, Augathella and Longreach among others.

Cattle were also yarded from as far afield as Mount Isa and Julia Creek.

The regular processors, backgrounders and feed-lotters were present throughout the sale.

The steer selection dominated the yarding with 4258 head offloaded.

Vendors Andy and Madonna Douglas, Springfield, Mitchell sold 125 Droughtmaster cross steers to average 378c/kg at 336kg and returned an average of $1269 per head.

The commercial producers operate a predominantly breeding enterprise at their Maranoa block targeting the feeder market in their offloads.

The steers had recently finished off on oats before selling.

Mr Douglas said they were largely crossing Simmental bulls over Droughtmaster females in their operation with their breeder herd infused with Glenlands Droughtmaster bloodlines.

A pen of their 11 Droughtmaster cross steers fetched 380c/kg to weigh 391kg and returned $1486/hd.

A further pen of their 18 Droughtmaster cross steers sold for 368c/kg to weigh 386kg and returned $1422/hd.

The pen saw a premium of six cents on last week’s maximum of 440c/kg in the 200-to 280-kilogram weight range category.

Their Angus cows sold to 270c/kg, reaching a top of $1681 to average $1535.

The producers operate a grass-fed Angus beef and wholesale operation at their Sunshine Coast Hinterland block.

The western offloads showed no signs of slowing down with vendors Sam and Nicole Dart, Dart Pastoral Company, Keen Gea, Torrens Creek selling a quality line of 209 Charolais and Droughtmaster cross steers to average 380c/kg at 308kg and returned $1170/hd.

A pen of their 15 Charolais cross steers fetched 390c/kg to weigh 317kg and returned $1238/hd.

A further pen of their 27 Charolais cross steers also reached 390c/kg weighing in at 320kg and returned $1249/hd.

Based locally in the Maranoa region, the line had recently finished off on oats with the commercial producers primarily targeting the feeder market.

Impressing with a solid line of females were Cowan and Helen Keys who sold a run of 216 Droughtmaster and Charolais cross cows to average 311c/kg weighing 587kg and returned an average of $1827/hd.

A pen of their 16 Charolais cross cows fetched 323c/kg to weigh 619kg and returned $2002/hd.

Mrs Keys said their operation turned toward primarily crossing Angus bulls over Droughtmaster females.

The family also donated two beasts to be auctioned as part of the Roma Saleyards LifeFlight Charity Cattle sale raising just over $3500 for the aeromedical service.

Roma Saleyards donate $25,000 to LifeFlight from Charity Cattle Sale

MARANOA Regional Council’s Roma Saleyards will donate $25,000 to LifeFlight Australia after another successful charity sale held at the Roma Saleyards on Tuesday, 24 September.

Roma Saleyards donated a capped percentage of the liveweight and open auction selling fees received for each head of cattle sold.

A total of 8595 head of cattle were sold on the day.

LifeFlight Australia is a world leader in aeromedical care with a core purpose to save lives and serve the community.

Operating with an advanced fleet of helicopters and air ambulance jets, this vital rescue service provides the people of Queensland with the assurance that emergency medical care is available 24/7, 365 days a year.

Roma’s LifeFlight Surat Gas Aeromedical Service (SGAS) helicopter came to the aid of 58 people in the past financial year.

As part of their commitment to the Maranoa region and beyond, the SGAS partners donate 150 flying hours each year to assure community aeromedical coverage.

This service is at no cost to patients.

Mayor Wendy Taylor and Roma Saleyards Portfolio Spokesperson recognised the importance of LifeFlight and the essential work they do for the region’s residents, workers and visitors in providing aeromedical and primary health care services.

“LifeFlight plays an essential role in providing emergency air rescue in our region and Council is pleased to be able to donate to their organisation once again,” Cr Taylor said.

“To know our community can rely on the services and support of LifeFlight in times of need provides valued peace of mind.

“Our LifeFlight Charity Cattle Sale has become a highly anticipated sale day in our Roma Saleyards calendar, and we look forward to continuing to support the aeromedical service well into the future.”

LifeFlight’s South West Regional Advisory Committee Chair Kate Scott said the generosity of the Maranoa community and producers was commendable.

“The Maranoa Regional Council and local community are so passionate about the service LifeFlight provides to the region, and we continue to be astounded with the generosity shown,” she said.

“The majority of LifeFlight’s missions to the Maranoa region could happen to anyone.

“Alot of us out here live and work in high-risk situations and with this, unexpected accidents or emergencies can happen.

“We are extremely fortunate to have a LifeFlight helicopter staffed with a critical care doctor and paramedic only a triple 0 call away.”

NLRS Commentary

With the dry weather persisting Roma Agents yarded 8,546 head.

The yarding consisted of 4,258 steers 2,774 heifers and 2,095 cows with 128 cows and calves.

All the regular processors feedlotters and backgrounders present.

The market could not maintain the levels of the previous sale.

Yearling steers 200 to 280kg topped 446c/kg. Yearling steers 280 to 330kg sold from 310c to 408c/kg for better quality lines. Yearling steers 330 to 400kg made to 408c with the 400 to 480kg making to 386c/kg. Yearling steers over 480kg made to 374c/kg. Yearling heifers 200 to 280kg with the majority selling from 200c for the plainer types to 336c/kg. Yearling heifers 280 to 330kg also lost ground and sold to 344c/kg. Yearling heifers 330 to 400kg made to 338c/kg to restockers.

Steers over 540g sold from 250c to 328c/kg for the better finished. Bullocks over 600kg sold well to make 340c/kg. The heavy heifers over 540kg topped 337c/kg to average 324c/kg. Approx 2,000 cows and 945 bulls were offered and sold mostly to a firm market. The 2 score cows sold from 200 c to 275c/kg. The 3 score cows over 520kg topped 328c/kg. Bulls under 450kg sold to 390c/kg. Heavy bulls over 600kg to 311c/kg.
