As the Easter holiday approaches, and no autumn break in sight around the supply area, numbers spiked significantly. Some of the usual domestic and export buyers were focused on feedlot or restocking orders, creating a competitive environment for secondary stock, especially those under 500kg, which are particularly suited for feedlots. The recent sale featured a significant offering of 2,150 cows, although heavy export steers and heifers were limited in each agents run. The competition for secondary stock was robust, with feedlots dominating most classes, reflecting a clear trend in buyer preferences.

In terms of pricing, trade heifers saw a solid range, selling from 320c to 376c while the steers portion topped at 404c/kg . Meanwhile, feeder steers weighing between 330 to 400kg attracted slightly weakerΒ  demand on mixed breeds from northern feedlots, fetching prices between 340c to 424c/kg. Medium-weight feeder steers gained traction as the sale progressed on a certain breed, achieving prices from 306c to 427c/kg. The interest in feeder heifers was particularly keen, with the bulk of those in the 330-400kg range selling from 300c to 366c, while medium weights saw an increase of 8c, averaging 357c/kg. Light-weight steers, weighing between 200 to 280kg, were met with strong competition, topping at 475c/kg and averaging $998/head.

On the export side of the market, the availability of heavy cattle was limited. Heavy steers and bullocks, which are typically favoured by processors, sold to mixed trends than previous sales, with prices ranging from 302 to 426c/kg. The sale of 2,150 cows also showcased fluctuating prices after a solid start. Heavy cows experienced a moderate dip, losing 12c and selling between 320 to 346c/kg. Leaner cows under 520kg saw a more significant decline, with prices dropping by about 23c, resulting in sales for the better covered types making between 255 to 304c/kg.
